We Stand In Solidarity

The rise in antisemitism we are seeing today is nothing short of alarming and it is of grave concern to our San Diego Jewish community. The investment that Federation and other local Jewish institutions have had to make in physical security totals many millions of dollars. Knowing that we have the strong, vocal support of city and county leaders is crucial as we work with our partners and allies to address the abhorrent flyering, “swatting,” and other dangerous antisemitic acts that have been all too common in San Diego lately.

We are happy to share this message of support from Mayor Todd Gloria and commend his efforts alongside the City and local law enforcement – who are all working hard to address these disturbing incidents. We know all too well that we are not the sole targets of those who spew this vitriol, and we stand in solidarity with all who seek to stand up against hate and intolerance.

As we enter the High Holy Days – the most sacred, beautiful, and reflective period in our calendar – let us not forget that Jewish life is flourishing here in San Diego with a community of more than 100,000 strong. We are remarkably diverse, hailing from many different countries, with many different backgrounds, customs and perspectives. We have nearly 100 thriving Jewish organizations serving our educational, social, spiritual, health and financial needs, while also supporting those in need outside of our community. We are deeply engaged in the life of this city and county, and support many of the institutions that make San Diego “America’s Finest City.”

Within the next few weeks, thousands of us will celebrate the Jewish New Year – a time to recommit to treating ourselves and one another with kindness and respect, and to the essential and fundamentally Jewish work of tikkun olam, “repairing the world.”

We know that together with strong leaders like Mayor Gloria and his team, alongside our allies and partners throughout the community, we can make significant strides in reducing antisemitism and all forms of hate and focus instead on all that we have to celebrate.
