Supporting & Engaging Local Holocaust Survivors

Supporting & Engaging Local Holocaust Survivors

Holocaust Survivors are a testament to resilience and the indomitable human spirit. Sadly, many Survivors in our community live near or below the poverty line, having outlived their savings. Some face agonizing choices between essential needs like food and rent. Others have persistent challenges and traumas that they have carried with them their entire lives, making them more at risk for poor physical and mental health, depression, and social isolation. After enduring one of the darkest periods in human history, we want to ensure they live comfortably and with dignity for the remaining years of their lives. That is why Federation supports dedicated service programs and provides engaging social opportunities to help keep them connected with each other and our broader San Diego Jewish community.

Our Priorities Emergency Aid Support

Emergency Aid Support

Each year, in partnership with KAVOD SHEF, Federation provides a grant to Jewish Family Service in support of San Diego Holocaust Survivors. This funding provides urgent and critical emergency services to Survivors, including dental, vision, food, emergency medical support, emergency home care, emergency transportation, and urgent home services (such as utilities, repairs and rent support).

We are proud to support this critical work, and encourage any Survivors in need of assistance to contact Jewish Family Service’s Center for Jewish Care.

Our Priorities New Life Club

New Life Club

Now sponsored by our Federation, the New Life Club is a thriving social group where Survivors and their families can connect, share, and find solace. Founded in 1953, the club meets monthly for a variety of activities, including lectures, concerts, shows, and meals, creating a vibrant and supportive environment.

Federation also hosts “Friends of the New Life Club” in support of our New Life Club members. We are always looking for volunteers to provide transportation support and/or participate in Club activities, or contribute financially to support additional programming. For questions or more information, contact Matt Goldberg.

Yom HaShoah Commemorations

Each year, Federation and our partners at the Lawrence Family JCC host a community commemoration in honor of HaShoah. The annual event provides an opportunity for hundreds of our community members, including local Holocaust Survivors and their families, to come together in remembrance and reflection. The program features prayers, songs, a candle-lighting ceremony, and other meaningful presentations. Visit our Community Calendar to learn more about upcoming events, including this year’s Commemoration.
