1,000 San Diegans Celebrate Purim

On Sunday, March 17th Federation co-hosted a community-wide Purim Carnival and hamentashen bake at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, JACOBS FAMILY CAMPUS. More than 1,000 people enjoyed a fun-filled day of rides, bounce houses, bubbles and lots of delicious treats! Together with our partners, the JCC, Congregation Beth Am, Congregation Beth El, Ohr Shalom, and Shabbat San Diego, Federation played a key role in creating an inclusive and meaningful event for all to enjoy.

Federation was also proud to host 13 Jewish summer camps for a camp fair to help carnival goers learn more about Jewish Camp. Camp has proven to be a valuable resource in connecting children with their Jewish identity. For many campers, year-round connections are being made where none may have previously existed. Recognizing these strong connections between attending camp and becoming an active member of our Jewish community is the driving force behind our camping program, and with your support, we support offer two different programs to send local kids to Jewish camps — One Happy Camper, for first-time campers, and Federation's Needs-Based Camp Scholarship.

Traditionally, Purim carnivals have been insular events designed for congregation members. Our shift to a community-wide event, in partnership with several local synagogues and community agencies, created a greater sense of belonging and community.

We can’t wait for next year!
