Developing New Solutions to Fight Poverty in the San Diego Jewish Community

PovertyThrough a monthly Working Group on Jewish Poverty & Sustainability, community partners are coming together to both identify the challenges facing Jewish families and ways to overcome them. Along with Federation, the Working Group includes Hebrew Free Loan, Impact Cubed, Jewish Community Foundation San Diego, Jewish Family Service, the Kindness Initiative and Seacrest at Home. Nearly 20 percent of Jewish households earn less than $30,000 annually but often are unaware of government resources that can lift them up. The Working Group uses its network to educate those who could benefit from the earned income tax credit and assistance provided by 2-1-1 San Diego and the San Diego EITC Coalition. Darren Schwartz of Federation spoke with the San Diego Union Tribune and KUSI about these efforts.

Emergency Campaign for Ukraine
UkraineWith your support and support from incredible organizational partners, Federation has raised over $500,000 to help provide shelter, food and other goods, medical services, emergency Aliyah support, and more to Jews in harm’s way. All of the funds, which continue to come in, are forwarded through Jewish Federations of North America to our overseas partners–The Jewish Agency for Israel, Joint Distribution Committee, and World-ORT. One of our generous donors, Gary Shekhter, and his daughter Sarah, recently were in Ukraine providing on-the-ground relief with supplies collected and packaged by Federation. They were living out our Jewish values in the most impactful way. Make your donation today.
