Israel Connections

Fostering dynamic connections between San Diego and Israel

Israel Connections builds local community connection to Israel, funds and helps implement designated projects, and participates in the collective support for world Jewry.

Missions to Israel serve to strengthen Jewish identity, build Jewish community, and grow Jewish philanthropy.

By fostering missions and exchange programs, Federation’s Israel Connections Initiative enhances individual experiences through ongoing, people-to-people relationships.

Strengthening Jewish communities in Israel and around the world has always been, and remains, a top priority for Federation.

JDC Programs

The Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) partners with the Israeli government to create strategies and solutions to combat the country’s biggest internal challenges. By investing in Israel’s most precious resource—its people—JDC helps ensure Israel’s future.

JDC’s priorities in Israel can be divided into five departments, each of which represents a target population.

ELDERLY

One in three seniors in Israel live under the poverty line—be they immigrants, Holocaust survivors, or Halutzim. JDC develops innovative services that provide for the needs of the elderly and cares for them in a way that preserves their dignity and increases their quality of life.

CHRONICALLY UNEMPLOYED POPULATIONS

Israel has one of the highest underemployment rates in the developed world, a grave and unsustainable situation that JDC is pioneering groundbreaking initiatives to correct. The three highest-risk populations in this space are Arab-Israelis, Haredim-Israelis, and Ethiopian-Israelis. Employment is one of the most powerful tools in reducing poverty.

PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

JDC has developed cutting-edge programs that are run by and cater to Israelis with disabilities. JDC programs focus on bringing Israelis from every community into the workforce, giving them the ability to support themselves and their families.

CHILDREN AND YOUTH AT-RISK

Tens of thousands of Israel’s children and teenagers live on the margins of society. Through partnerships with the government of Israel and Federations/donors across North America, JDC’s early childhood and youth-at-risk programs give underprivileged Israeli kids the skills, knowledge, and sense of self to break out of the cycle of poverty and become the country’s leaders of tomorrow.

THE INSTITUTE FOR LEADERSHIP AND GOVERNANCE

This one-of-a-kind institute works with senior civil servants in the Israeli government, as well as with non-profit lay boards, to help equip them with the tools they need to improve the quality of service and programs for Israel’s most at-risk in order to realize transformative changes in Israeli society.

JAFI Programs

The largest Jewish non-profit organization in the world, the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) plays a leading role in facilitating the immigration (Aliyah) and absorption of Jews and their families from the Diaspora into Israel. JAFI strives to inspire Jews throughout the world to connect with their people, heritage, and land, and empower them to build a thriving Jewish future and a strong Israel.

JAFI’s priorities in Israel can be divided into five principal areas:

PARTNERSHIP2GETHER

Connecting some 500 communities around the world in 46 partnerships, the Jewish Agency’s Partnership2Gether peoplehood platform has become the paradigm for successfully partnering global Jewish communities directly with Israeli communities. Communities share ideas, strengths, challenges and models of success; and empower one another to generate waves of change.

YOUTH FUTURES

This Jewish Agency flagship program provides community-based mentoring for at-risk pre-teens and adolescents in Israel. Trained mentors work as trusted guides to help students improve school performance, strengthen social integration, and inspire engagement with the community. The mentors also connect youth, families, and communities with the services and local resources to help them overcome barriers to success.

YOUTH VILLAGES

The Jewish Agency’s four Youth Villages provide highly cost-effective boarding school settings for youth with severe emotional, behavioral, and family problems. Intensive educational, clinical, and social work services help 12 to 18-year-old teens complete high school and enter national service army with their peers. Each Youth Village offers distinctive programs to help students overcome barriers to achievement and reach their goals.

ABSORPTION CENTERS

Located throughout the country, Absorption Centers are temporary living quarters that provide a soft landing and supportive framework tailored to an oleh’s (new immigrant’s) needs. Furnished rooms or apartments are available to rent at substantially lower prices than on the private market. Ulpanim (intensive Hebrew classes) provided at most Absorption Centers are staffed by professional teams experienced in assisting new olim families, students, and singles in their absorption process.

AMIGOUR

Amigour is a Jewish Agency subsidiary that provides quality housing in Israel to the elderly, new immigrants, and single-parent families. Amigour operates 57 sheltered housing projects throughout Israel, serving more than 7,500 vulnerable senior citizens. For a nominal monthly fee, residents enjoy independent living in their own apartment within a tight-knit and professionally staffed community. A wide variety of social and cultural services are provided to enhance the quality of life of residents.
