The Ultra-Orthodox Community: Its Role in Society and Government

10:00AM - 11:00AM

Our second webinar in partnership with the Israel Democracy Institute will focus on the Ultra-Orthodox community in Israel, which is the fastest growing sector in the country. Historically, many have not integrated fully into Israeli society and since the founding of the state, they have been exempted from the required service in the Israel Defense Force. While there are signs of change and increased integration in the areas of workforce and education, the pace has been slow and deliberate, and army service is still a highly loaded issue. After initial signs of solidarity and greater understanding immediately following October 7th, in recent months deep societal rifts have escalated especially in light of the recent landmark decision by Israel’s Supreme Court that requires the military to conscript Ultra-Orthodox men.

During the session, we will hear about trends and research findings about the Ultra-Orthodox community from two IDI experts, joined by two Ultra-Orthodox grassroots activists who will share how they see themselves and their future within Israeli society.
