Yiddishland California and The House of Israel invite the public to a special screening of the silent film Die Stadt ohne Juden, “The City without Jews,” a 1924 Viennese masterpiece, directed and produced by H.K. Breslauer. The showing, accompanied by live music performed by world-renowned violinist Alicia Svigals and silent film pianist Donald Sosin, will take place on Wednesday, May 22 at 6:30 pm at the Hall of Nations in Balboa Park. Based on Hugo Bettauer’s bestselling dystopian novel, this film delves into the fictional Austrian City of ‘Utopia,’ a thinly veiled representation of Vienna, where an antisemitic law leads to the expulsion of all Jews. Don’t miss the opportunity to discover one of the few surviving Austrian expressionist films, enhanced by captivating original music performed by local artists. General admission tickets are $25, with an option to experience the movie at home via Zoom for $18. Tickets can be purchased at yiddishlandcalifornia.org/the-city-without-jews/.
