Yiddishland California and The House of Israel invite the public to a special screening of the silent film Die Stadt ohne Juden, “The City without Jews,” a 1924 Viennese masterpiece, directed and produced by H.K. Breslauer. The showing, accompanied by live music performed by world-renowned violinist Alicia Svigals and silent film pianist Donald Sosin, will take place on Wednesday, May 22 at 6:30 pm at the Hall of Nations in Balboa Park. Based on Hugo Bettauer’s bestselling dystopian novel, this film delves into the fictional Austrian City of ‘Utopia,’ a thinly veiled representation of Vienna, where an antisemitic law leads to the expulsion of all Jews.
